I attempted to re-create the feather in the tutorial and then went outside and picked up a snow covered dove feather as a reference object. Looking directly at the feather reveals an incredible level of detail. Iβm sure it could be replicated, but I realize the pencil tips would have to be very sharp on each stroke. Iβll keep my eyes open in the summer for some beautiful turkey feathers and sketch one.
-Great tutorial!
Wow :O It turned out much better than mine π Great job! Can’t wait to see your next one.
I used one of my photos as a reference. These magpies are quite beautiful where their black color is mixed with an iridescent deep purple that only shows in the sunlight. Quick question: how does one add a background to add some composition to a photo like this?
Thanks again!

Yes, they are beautiful. I love magpies. I have also drawn them on both white and gray paper; black and white animals always look better on gray paper.
Your drawing looks great. Next, try drawing it on gray paper and you have the background π
Just for fun, I added a little post processing on my ipad.
This is one of my favorite photo captures. Itβs a little dark, but itβs also a great pose.

So here is another experiment while Iβm recovering from hand surgery. Fortunately, my good hand was not the target. The reference I used is one of my photos of a beautiful red tailed hawk out back. I keep hoping it will come back to roost and I can grab some more photos. The dead branch from a Ponderosa pine tree was an added challenge also.
Looking amazing π Very lovely bird. The details on feather are well done, looks silky π The head and eyes are full of life, great job π Get well soon
